About the Role 

Kimbal is recruiting a Engineering Director – BESS to serve as the technical anchor of its BESS business unit. This leader will own the overall system architecture and ensure that every subsystem, from cells to grid interconnection, comes together as a coherent, competitive product. 

This is a founding role within a new division that operates with the autonomy and pace of a startup, backed by the resources of an established company with deep utility relationships across India. The role ill make the key architectural decisions that shape Kimbal’s first BESS product, working closely with business unit leadership and a small team of specialized domain engineers. As the business expands, they will grow, nurture, and lead the BESS engineering organization. 

Responsibilities 

• Own the BESS technical architecture including overall topology, subsystem interactions, and key design decisions from cells to grid interconnection. 
• Lead development of the product specifications, translating market and product requirements into actionable engineering targets for each subsystem. 
• Define technical interfaces between all major subsystems. 
• Author or oversee technical specifications for: 
• Cells and modules 
• Racks and enclosures 
• DC power distribution and protection 
• Thermal management 
• Safety and fire suppression 
• Communications and human interfaces 
• Lead technical supplier evaluation, due diligence, and selection; and own the ongoing technical relationships with key suppliers. 
• Define system-level validation and factory/site acceptance testing requirements. 
• Lead installation and commissioning of pilot BESS deployments at Kimbal facilities. 
• Collaborate closely with controls, power, and BMS engineers to ensure design coherence across domains. 
• Work with business unit leadership to translate product strategy into engineering roadmap and technical priorities. 
• Grow, develop, and lead the BESS engineering team as it expands. 
• Maintain a thorough understanding of the global BESS competitive and technical landscape. 

Qualifications 

Required 

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related technical field. 
• Deep, hands-on experience in the design and delivery of utility-scale BESS products, covering the full lifecycle from requirements through commissioning. 
• Demonstrated systems-level engineering mindset, with the ability to manage technical integration across electrical, mechanical, thermal, and software domains simultaneously. 
• Experience leading supplier evaluation, technical due diligence, and selection. 
• Strong emotional intelligence that enables tight collaboration within a high-performance team. 
• Clear and effective written and verbal communication. 
• High standards for quality and attention to detail in work output. 

Preferred 

• Familiarity with the Indian grid regulatory environment: CEA technical standards, state-level SLDC requirements, domestic content regulations. 
• Familiarity with the Australian energy market, FCAS, and AS/NZS standards. 
• Familiarity with BESS and battery safety certifications such as IEC 62619, UL 9540/9540A, UN 38.3, BIS. 

• Experience in an early-stage product or business unit. 
• Experience building or scaling an engineering team.
